Enfance

Enfance is a contemporary take on a 18th century French styled dresser. I wanted to make something that people would want to interact with, to run their finger tips across they carved front when walking by. Its made of locally sourced sycamore, this contrasts with the typical darker woods used in traditional 18th century French style furniture. Sycamore being a tightly grained wood allows for a very smooth finish on the piece.

The carved drawer fronts, sides, legs and drawer dovetails are all cut and sculpted by hand. I like the idea that if I was every to reproduce this piece it would never be the same as the last, that each one would be unique in its own right.

There is a small carving in the bottom of each drawer base gilded in 24 carat gold.

Dimensions: Length 1100mm, Width 500mm, Height 780mm

This piece was shortlisted for the Young Makers Awards 2023 and showing at the exhibition held in London’s Furniture Maker Guild Hall, and will be on show in the VAS Centenary Show in Edinburgh in February 2024 in the Royal Scottish Academy building.
